Defense Propels Nebraska To Upset Of Virginia Tech December 28, 1999
By Matt Schulz MIAMI, Fla. -- Three games, 14 points allowed. Now Nebraska is one game away from yet another national title. In their 24-7 Orange Bowl win over Virginia Tech, the Huskers defense forced seven fumbles (recovering four), allowed just 156 yards of total offense and prevented Heisman finalist Michael Vick and the Hokies from scoring a single offensive touchdown. In short: Complete and total dominance. The Huskers advance to meet Florida State in the Virtual Championship Series title game tomorrow at the Sugar Bowl. The Seminoles got to the finals with a win over Alabama yesterday. The winner will be the second VCS titlist, following Ohio State from last season. Despite gaining just 58 yards in the first half, the game was tied with 2:30 left in the second quarter. Superstar defender Corey Moore ran a fumble back 39 yards with 12:21 left in the half to tie the game at 7. The fumble -- one of five (three lost) on the day by the Huskers -- happened on an errant pitch from QB Eric Crouch (6-of-12, 171 yds, 0 TDs, 0 INTs; 35 yds, 1 TD rushing) to Cornell Buckhalter on an option play. However, 10 minutes later, Nebraska would grab the lead for good. Dahrran Diedrick scored on a 19-yard run to put the Huskers up 14-7. The Hokies never really threatened to score in the second half, while the Huskers added a third-quarter field goal and touchdown with 4:25 left in the game that officially salted the game away for Nebraska. Vick had a dismal day (3-of-7, 29 yds, 0 TDs, 1 INT; 24 yds rushing) and RB Shyrone Stith (20 carries, 59 yds.) wasn't much better. But no team has been able to do much against Nebraska's defense in the VCS: Now, the Huskers get to see if they can stop the mighty Florida State offense.
