NEW HAVEN, Conn. - Led by a career-high five goals from Carli Vogler and three each from Lauren Taylor and Jenn Warden, Yale posted a 19-11 win over Fairfield Wednesday afternoon at Johnson Field. The Bulldogs (5-4) led by as many as 10 goals before the Stags (3-5) went on a brief run midway through the second half. Sarah Masterson scored three to lead Fairfield, while Beth Loffredo had two to become the Stags' all-time leader in goals.
Yale seized control of this game immediately. After unassisted goals by Taylor and Kat Peetz, Lara Melniker set up Marya Myers for her first goal of the year. Warden then snagged a Fairfield pass on a clear attempt, quickly working it over to Vogler to complete a 4-0 run in a span of just over two minutes.
When the Stags finally got control of the ball for the first time, they turned it into a goal by Loffredo that gave her the school career record (120). The Bulldogs responded with a goal by Warden, set up by Taylor, that forced the Stags to send in Lauren Chatnik for Kristin Genovese(2 saves) in goal.
Melniker and Mary Vallely traded free-position goals before Sara Greenberg (unassisted) and Vogler (assisted by Tucker Marrison) increased Yale's lead to 8-2. After a goal by Masterson closed the gap, Meredith Callahan got her first tally of the season and Vogler added another. Masterson tacked on one more 58 seconds before halftime for a 10-4 score.
Lonnie Sarnell then came on to replace Ellen Cameron (6 saves) in goal for Yale, and the Bulldogs started the second half just like the first half: with a 4-0 run. Vogler had two of the tallies, while Taylor and Warden had one each. Greenberg, Peetz, Vogler and Taylor Fragapane all had assists.
The Stags then went on a run of their own, getting two goals from Kylee Martin and one more from Masterson to pull within 14-7 with 20:12 remaining.
Another Myers goal gave Yale some breathing room with 16 minutes left, and Casey Littlefield came on to play goal. Fairfield got goals from Julia Poli and Abbey Goodwin to pull within 6 with 14 minutes left.
Greenberg scored again with 7:06 to play. Taylor then scored on a free-position shot with 5:29 to play, and the teams each registered two goals after that. Yale's came from Callahan and Warden, Fairfield's came from Loffredo and Poli. Chatnik finished with 9 saves.
In addition to her three goals and an assist, Warden also chipped in a team-best five ground balls, 3 caused turnovers and 3 draw controls (tied with Myers). The Bulldogs limited Fairfield to just 12 clears in 23 attempts.
Yale returns to action with a key Ivy League game against Harvard Saturday at 1:00 p.m. at Johnson Field. The Bulldogs are 1-1 in Ancient Eight play, while the Crimson (2-5) have yet to play a league game.
