NEW HAVEN, Conn. - Keith Vereb scored the only goal of the game early in the first half as Penn remained in a first-place tie in the Ivy League with a 1-0 victory over Yale at Reese Stadium. Vereb's goal came on a long free kick just 3 minutes, 4 seconds into the first half.
The Bulldogs outshot the Quakers 16-8, including 7-2 in the second half, but were unable to get the equalizer.
"Conceding an early goal put us on our back foot," said Yale head coach Brian Tompkins. "I thought our response was very good. In the remainder of the game, we played with great conviction and created a lot of good chances."
Yale's best opportunity came in the 75th minute. Alex Munns settled a cross in front at the edge of the box, but his hard shot was just high.
"We can't seem to get any breaks," Tompkins said.
Daniel Cepero made six saves in goal to post the shutout for Penn (8-4-1, 4-1 Ivy).
The Quakers nearly added an insurance goal midway through the first half, but Yale defender Jake Miller slid to deflect Alex Grendi's shot over the end line. Grendi made a move to get around Yale goalkeeper Erik Geiger and appeared to have an open net.
"This was a significantly better performance than last week," Tompkins said. "We were a little unfortunate not to get a goal, but there are reasons to be encouraged."
The Bulldogs (4-9-1, 1-4 Ivy) return to action on Tuesday night when they host Albany at 7 p.m. It is the final non-league game of the season for Yale.
