New Haven, CT - Junior attackman Seth Goldberg tallied six goals and senior captain Scott Kenworthy added four more in the Yale men's lacrosse team's 15-11 win over Penn at Johnson Field.
Goldberg, who had a career day with seven points, had two goals in the first and fourth quarters to help his undefeated Elis improve to 4-0 overall in their Ivy League and home opener.
The Bulldogs, who led 5-4 at the half and had a season-high 15 goals, never trailed. However, Penn (2-3, 0-1 Ivy) scored three straight in the third to tie the score at 7-7 before Yale went on a five-goal surge to put it away.
Kenworthy got two of his goals in the final frame as the Bulldogs outscored Penn 6-4. Dan Brillman (2-3-5), David Schecter (1-2-3), Ned Britt (1-1-2) and Marcus Ruopp also hit the net for the Blue, who were 2-for-7 with the extra man.
Freshman goalie Jordan Ellis, making his fourth straight start, stopped a season-high 18 shots, including six in the second quarter.
Penn, which outshot Yale 44-38 and connected on five of seven extra-man chances, had two goals each from Will Phillips (2-2-4), James Riordan and P.J. Gilbert. Ryan Kelly stopped 12 shots in net.
"Seth [Goldberg] was in the zone today and made some great moves out there. We had a balanced attack with six different players scoring goals," said Yale head coach Andy Shay, coaching his first home game for the Blue. "We also got a fine effort from Jordan [Ellis], he saw a lot of shots."
