Yale hockey captain Nick Shalek took home two major awards last night at the team's annual banquet, held at the Yale University Golf Course.
Shalek, who finished his career with one goal and six assists, was honored with the David C. Noyes III award, given to that player who inspires his teammates though determination, grit, and courage, as well as the Edward M. Wright, MD award for athletic and academic achievement.
After recieving his awards, the outgoing captain introduced Yale's newest leader, Christian Jensen, who was voted captain for the 2005-2006 season by his teammates.
Jensen, who was Yale's third leading scorer this season with 11 goals and 9 assists for 20 points, took home the Malcolm G. Chace Award, given to the player who, through sportsmanship, spirit, and ability has best represented the traditions of Yale hockey.
Sophomore forward Brad Mills picked up the J. Murray Murdoch Award as the team's most valuable player. Despite missing five games, Mills led the Bulldogs in scoring with 12 goals and 14 assists this season, including five power play goals and three shorthanded scores.
A pair of graduating seniors, goalie Peter Cohen and forward C.J. Nibbe, were co-recipients of the Yale Coaches Award for their dedication and contribution to team morale over their careers.
The John Poinier Award for the best defensive player on the team went not to a blueliner but to forward Jeff Hristovski, who played on Yale's power play and penalty kill units as well as being the team's second leading scorer. Hristovski finished the season with eight goals and 16 assists.
A Yale defenseman, however, did take home a prize, with rookie Robert Page being awarded the Martin Dwyer III award as the team's best first-year player.
