NEW HAVEN, Conn. - Yale took third at the 72nd National Dinghy Championships Friday. The finish is the Bulldogs' best at the regatta since 1981. The College of Charleston (225 pts.) and Dartmouth (234 pts.) claimed first and second respectively. Yale tallied 237 points overall. It was in the B division where the Elis made their money, as freshman Thomas Barrows and junior Abigail Coplin blew away the field. The twosome claimed first place with 76 points. The Dartmouth boat (101 pts.) was next best.
18 races were sailed in the two divisions over three sessions. The Bulldogs climbed the ladder each day, moving from sixth after seven races to fourth after 14 and finally into third place.
Barrows and Coplin dominated: they won seven of the 18 races contested and placed in the top five on five other occasions.
In the A division, Yale was represented by four different sailors. Junior captain Zachary Brown skippered all but one race, when senior Matthew Barry handled the duties. Sophomore Grace Becton crewed 17 of the 18 races with senior Kendra Emhiser sailing the other.
The boat claimed 10th in the division with 161 points on five top five finishes. The Charleston boat (75 pts.), the Hobart boat (111 pts.) and the Boston College boat (121 pts.) placed first, second and third respectively.
On Tuesday, Yale finished second at the 48th National Team Racing Championships.
