Four Student-Athletes Earn Academic All-District Honors

CINCINNATI – Senior Lauren Clary and junior Kristen Clary have been named to the 2005 ESPN The Magazine At-Large District IV All-Academic First Team while sophomore Jeremy Miller and senior Sarah Sparks were named to the District’s All-Academic Second Team as selected by members of the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA). The Clary sisters join eight other student-athletes from the five-state district and will represent District IV on the national ballot for selection of ESPN The Magazine Academic All-Americans.

Lauren Clary, a senior on the women’s tennis team from Terre Haute, Ind., earns her second consecutive honor on the first team after also being named to the team in 2004. Earlier this spring, Clary won her third consecutive Atlantic 10 Conference Student-Athlete of the Year honor for women’s tennis, becoming just the second student-athlete in A-10 history to accomplish the feat since the award was instituted at the beginning of the 1999-2000 season. Clary was also named to the 2005 All-Conference Team for the fourth time after going 31-5 in singles play, including a 20-3 mark in dual matches at No. 1. In doubles action, she was 30-8 including an 18-5 record in dual matches at No. 1 with Bauer. Clary will leave Xavier as the all-time leader in singles and doubles wins with a 115-25 record in singles along with a mark of 103-27 in doubles. In the fall, Clary will head to St. Louis to attend Saint Louis University to pursue her doctorate in psychology. As a psychology major, Clary posted a 3.91 grade point average in her four years at Xavier.

Kristen Clary, a junior on the women’s tennis team from Terre Haute, Ind., earns her first District IV All-Academic honor after being named to the A-10 All-Academic Team for the second straight year and was also honored on the All-Conference Team. She went 27-8 in singles including a 19-4 record at No. 2 in dual matches. In doubles action, Clary posted a mark of 19-5 in doubles with a 13-9 record at No. 2 and No. 3 in dual matches. An accounting major, Clary owns a 4.0 grade point average.

Miller, a sophomore on the men’s tennis team from Marblehead, Ohio, was named to the District IV Second Team after posting a 15-15 record in singles while playing at No. 1 and No. 2. In addition to his accomplishments on the court, Miller holds a 4.0 grade point average over four semesters as a history major. Earlier this spring, Miller was named to the Atlantic 10 Conference’s All-Academic Team. As a freshman, Miller was named as an ITA Scholar-Athlete while also being named to the Atlantic 10 Conference Commissioner’s Honor Roll. Miller, a history major, owns a stellar 4.0 grade point average.

Sparks, a senior on the women’s golf team from Kendallville, Ind., earned second team honors after recording a 79.34 stroke average in her final year with the Musketeers. She posted three top 10 finishes on the year including a season-best finish of sixth at the Colonial Athletic Association Championship on April 15-17 in Hot Springs, Va. Sparks is a two-time All-CAA honoree and turned in a season-best round of 72 (E) in the fall at the Jeannine McHaney Invitational in Lubbock, Texas. An electronic media major, Sparks posted a 4.0 grade point average over her four-year career at Xavier.
