March 26, 2007

CINCINNATI - On the heels of big weeks for both the Xavier men's and women's tennis teams, three Musketeers earned weekly honors from the Atlantic 10 Conference on Monday. Sophomore Doug Matthews was named the Performer of the Week, while freshmen J.T. Torbeck and Kaitlyn Zinn were honored as the Rookie of the Week for their respective sports.

Matthews went 3-0 this week in singles and 3-0 doubles as the Musketeers won three straight over IPFW, St. Bonaventure and Temple. From the No. 1 position, Matthews helped XU extend its winning streak to five and improve to 10-8 overall and 6-1 in the A-10. The sophomore is now 13-5 in singles play for the season and 11-8 with doubles partner, senior Jeremy Miller.

Torbeck also went unbeaten for Xavier this weekend, as the freshman posted three wins in No. 4 singles and three more in second doubles. The freshman is now unbeaten in five straight singles and five straight doubles matches. He won all three singles matches in straight sets, while teaming with doubles partner Ra'ees Ismail to win all three of their matches. For Torbeck, it marks his second straight Rookie of the Week nod and fourth overall this season.

Zinn extended her unbeaten streak in singles to four matches, with three wins this week over Butler, St. Bonaventure and Duquesne. The freshman beat Yolande Callaghan from Bona 6-1, 6-3 on Friday and needed three sets to get past Duquesne's Rachel McGowan on Sunday. Zinn owns an impressive 11-3 record this season.

XU head coach Jim Brockhoff continues to close in on career win No. 1,000. He currently sits with 997 victories to his credit.

The win by both the men's and women's teams put the Musketeers in prime position for top seeded heading into the A-10 Championships. The men have three non-conference matches remaining on their schedule before A-10 Championship play commences in Monroeville, Pa. on April 5. The women's championship begins April 20.
