Women's Soccer Team Records Impressive Win At St. Bonaventure

ST. BONAVENTURE, NY – The Xavier University women’s soccer team blasted host St. Bonaventure 6-1 on Friday, recording the Musketeers’ fourth straight win. The victory, which raised XU’s records to 10-7-1 overall and 6-4 in the Atlantic 10 Conference, clinched XU’s 15th straight winning season overall and its ninth straight winning season in Atlantic 10 Conference play.

Xavier opened the scoring just 5:27 into the match as junior Lauren Giesting (Cincinnati/McAuley) found the back of the net for an unassisted goal. St. Bonaventure answered with a goal just seven minutes later to deadlock the score at 1-1 at the 12:59 mark.

The Musketeers scored what proved to be the game-winning goal as freshman Amber Silvis (Georgetown, OH/Western Brown) scored off an assist from Giesting at the 25:24 mark. It would be the first of five unanswered goals for XU.

Freshman Ashley Valdiserri (Bethel Park, PA/Bethel Park) scored the next two Musketeer goals. She scored off an assist from senior Tracy Veith (Cincinnati/St. Ursula Academy) at the 34:48 mark and again at the 40:42 mark off an assist from sophomore Angie Scarlato (Cincinnati/Mother of Mercy). Scarlato finished off the first half scoring with a penalty kick goal at the 44:22 mark to give XU a decisive 5-1 advantage at halftime. Scarlato scored the only goal of the second half as she found the back of the net for an unassisted goal at the 74:27 mark.

The Bonnies fell to 5-13 overall and 3-7 in the Atlantic 10 Conference.

Xavier closes out the 2003 schedule on Sunday at 1:00 p.m. at Duquesne.
