Xavier Women’s Soccer Team Completes Sweep of Final Home Weekend
CINCINNATI, OH --- The Xavier University women's soccer team completed a two-day sweep with a 1-0 double overtime win over visiting Duquesne today at XU’s Corcoran Field. Xavier was playing its second match in 24 hours, having played St. Bonaventure on Saturday due to inclement weather conditions on Friday in Cincinnati. Duquesne played at Dayton on Friday.
It was a big day for all three seniors on Senior Day. Senior Katie Broe (Cincinnati/St. Ursula Academy) nailed the game-winning penalty kick 1:59 into the second sudden victory overtime period. Senior goalkeeper Megan Veith (Cincinnati/St. Ursula Academy) recorded her second shutout of the season with six saves. Senior Tricia Ruszkowski (Cincinnati/Ursuline), who has been out of action all season due to an ACL knee injury, started and played the first five minutes. In the second overtime Xavier came out aggressively. Sophomore Melissa Clavier (Cincinnati/Mother of Mercy) broke into the box with the ball and, before she could get off the potential game-winning goal, was taken down from behind by a Duquesne defender. The referee awarded XU a penalty kick, which Broe nailed into the upper left side of the goal at the 101:59 mark. Xavier dominated the statistics, outshooting the visitors 24-10, including 10-6 in shots on goal. But XU needed almost 102 minutes to finish off the victory. Xavier raised its record to 4-5 in the Atlantic 10 Conference and 8-9 overall, while Duquesne fell to 1-7-1 in the A-10 and 5-11-1 overall.
The Musketeers finish the regular season next weekend with matches at Saint Josephs on Friday and at Temple next Sunday.
