Women's Golf Wins NIU Springlake Classic

SEBRING, Fla. --- The women’s golf team won at the 10-team at the Northern Illinois Springlake Classic in Sebring, Fla. after shooting a school record 601 in the 36-hole event.

Xavier shot a school record 299 in the first round and followed that up with a 302 on the second day. Both the single round record of 300 and 36-hole mark of 602 had been set in the fall at the Great Smokies Collegiate.

The win is Xavier’s first-ever title in a multi-round event. The Musketeers have won 10 single-round events.

Senior Jill Stein was tournament runner-up after a 75 on Saturday. Stein’s first round 71 was the third lowest round in school history and her two round total of 146 was two off the school record.

Junior Sarah Sparks tied for fifth with a 149. Junior Abby Fowler tied for 12th with a 154, and classmate Emily Shoplik finished tied for 14th with a 155 for the tournament.

Freshmen Kathleen Hardy and Kara Manis finsiehd 31st and 39th respectively. Hardy tallied a 163 for the tournament and Manis finished at 165 while competing as an individual in this tournament.

The Xavier women’s golf team will host the St. Croix Collegiate Classic beginning Friday.
