Women's Basketball in Third Straight A-10 Final
PHILADELPHIA --- Xavier (No. 12 AP/No. 12 USA Today/ESPN/WBCA) advanced to its third consecutive Atlantic 10 Tournament Final with an 80-71 win over Dayton on Sunday. Taru Tuukkanen (Helsinki, Finland) led the defending tournament champion Xavier to the win by hitting all six of her shots in the second half to end with 22 points.
The Musketeers established a school record with its 27th win of this season. XU is 27-2 on the year. Xavier will play George Washington on Monday for the Atlantic 10 Championship. The Musketeers played a steady game in downing the Flyers. XU led for the final 35 minutes of the game. UD cut the margin to five, 61-56, with 8:49 left in the game. Xavier responded with a 10-0 run that was keyed by Amy Waugh (Ft. Wayne, Ind./Homestead). The sophomore guard hit a layup and a three before assisting a layup by Tuukkanen and a three by Reetta Piiarpi (Kotka, Finland/Minster (Ohio)) during the spurt. Seniors Nicole Levandusky (Palmerton, Pa./Palmerton) and Jennifer Phillips (Elida, Ohio/Elida) added 17 and 15 points apiece. Piipari ended with 11 as she and Waugh contributed six assists apiece. Chrissy Donovan led UD with 14 points. Monday’s Championship will be televised on ESPN2 and will start at 5 p.m.
