Seniors Shine In Win Over Flyers
CINCINNATI --- It was Senior Day, so accordingly Xavier’s graduating backcourt duo of Reetta Piipari and Amy Waugh made the difference as the Musketeer women’s basketball team downed Dayton 72-64 in front of 3,434 fans at the Cintas Center on Sunday.
Waugh scored a career high 34 points on 12-for-14 shooting and an 8-for-10 performance from three point range while Piipari recorded her ninth career double-double with 13 points and 11 assists. Xavier ends the regular season with a 19-8 record overall and an 11-5 mark in the Atlantic 10. The Musketeers finished second in the Atlantic 10 West and will have a first round bye for the A-10 Tournament. XU will open the postseason on Friday at 6 p.m. in the quarterfinals against the winner of Thursday's La Salle-Massachusetts first round game. The Musketeers have advanced to the A-10 semifinals in each of the last five seasons and have played in the title game three times in the last four years. The quarterfinal and semifinal rounds will be played at Rhode Island's Ryan Center. The Championship Game will be held at the site of the highest remaining seed. On Sunday, Xavier never could shed the Flyers until Waugh and Piipari unloaded from behind the arc. Xavier led by as many as 11 at 19-8 with 11:43 left in the first half. The Flyers battled back, and cut their deficit to two, making it 26-24 with 3:25 remaining in the period. XU closed the half with a 7-2 run to take a 33-26 lead into the lockers at intermission. Piipari opened the second half with back-to-back threes to build the Musketeer advantage to 13. The Flyers got the lead to seven, 45-38, when Waugh took over the game by scoring 23 of Xavier's final 27 points. Waugh's scoring barrage came as she sandwiched four three pointers around and old-fashioned three-point play. That put XU up 12, 67-55, with 4:37 remaining. The Flyers never got closer than seven down the stretch. Tara Boothe added 16 points and grabbed six rebounds for Xavier. Earlier in the day, Boothe won her record 11th Atlantic 10 Rookie of the Week award. Sarah Schloss led Dayton with 19 points.
