Six-Time Rookie Honoree Boothe Leads Xavier to Win
CINCINNATI --- Tara Boothe, who earlier in the day earned her sixth Atlantic 10 Rookie of the Week honor, recorded her second straight double-double with 13 points and 11 rebounds as Xavier downed Rhode Island 70-45 on Sunday at the Cintas Center.
Senior guard Amy Waugh added 20 points, her eighth 20-point scoring output of the season. Xavier, who was No. 17 in Sunday morning’s RPI according to collegerpi.com, climbs to 13-5 overall and 5-2 in the Atlantic 10. Rhode Island falls to 10-7 overall and 2-5 in league action. The Musketeers opened up a 9-2 lead in just over the first four minutes of the game. Rhode Island closed the gap to three points, at 14-11 with 11 minutes left in the opening period. Xavier scored the next seven points in the contest build the margin to double digits at 21-11 with seven and a half minutes left in the first half. The Musketeers led 37-25 at the break, and then hit eight of their first 11 shots of the second half to go up 57-33 10 minutes into the second stanza. Xavier shot 57.1 percent (12-21) from the field in the second half. Boothe’s double-double was her fifth of the year and came as Xavier outrebounded Rhody 37-23. Boothe, a graduate of Highlands High School in Northern Kentucky, is just the fifth player in the history of the Atlantic 10 Conference to win Rookie of the Week honors six times in one season. Waugh’s 20 points came as she was 4-of-7 from three point range and perfect on eight attempts at the foul line. Reetta Piipari finished with nine points and nine assists in the game for Xavier. Nikki Wells scored nine points and Aida Sarajlija scored eight off the bench for Xavier. Shayla Johnson led Rhode Island with nine points. Xavier will return to action on Friday night with a 7 p.m. game at Saint Joseph’s.
