Women's Basketball Downs Rhode Island

KINGSTON, R.I. --- Tara Boothe led Xavier with 19 points as the Xavier women’s basketball team beat Rhode Island 66-55 on Sunday afternoon.

Kristy Wallner added nine points and Aida Sarajlija finished with eight. Freshman Miranda Green also tallied nine points, including five free throws in the final minute and a half.

Wallner and Alexis Henderson each had seven rebounds for the Musketeers (12-7, 4-4), as XU held a 38-26 edge on the boards.

Shayla Johnson had 18 points and Katie Stailing added 16 to lead Rhode Island (10-8, 4-4).

XU led 8-4 in the first eight minutes of play. The Musketeers then used a 15-2 run to go up 23-6 with four minutes left in the half. URI went without a field goal for eight and a half minutes during the Xavier spurt.

The Musketeers led 25-10 at halftime, as Xavier outshot URI 39 percent (9-23) to 15 percent (4-26).

Xavier opened the second half with a 9-3 run to hold a 34-13 lead four minutes into the period.

The Rams battled back late, and cut the deficit to single digits, but Xavier hit free throws down the stretch to secure the victory. XU finished the game having shot 80.6 percent (25-31) at the foul line.

Xavier will play at Dayton on Friday at 7 p.m.
