Men's Tennis Finishes Successful Season with Solid A-10 Performance

The men’s tennis team ended a successful season by capping it off with a third place finish in the Atlantic 10 Tournament, behind St. Bonaventure and Massachusetts respectively.

Xavier won its quarterfinal match in the A-10 Tournament against Temple 4-1. In the semifinals, the team lost a close match to Massachusetts 4-3. However, the squad bounced back by defeating George Washington 4-3 to finish in third place. The match went down to the wire and was decided at No. 1 singles where junior Danny Sturdevan (Knoxville, TN/South Doyle) came back to win 5-7, 6-4, 6-4.

The team finished their spring regular season with a record of 9-11, highlighted by victories at Dayton and George Washington. One of the most impressive performances of the season was recorded by Sturdevan when he defeated Michigan State No. 1 singles star Goran Topalo 1-6, 6-4, 7-5. Head Coach Jim Brockhoff called it "The biggest win for Xavier tennis in the last 15 years." Sturdevan finished with a 6-10 singles record, all at the No. 1 position. Junior Rob Bakker (Beverwijk, The Netherlands/Augustynus College) won all six matches he played in the tournament (3-0 at singles, 3-0 at doubles) and posted the team’s best record, finishing 15-4 at singles and 10-6 at doubles. Junior Aaron Bauer (Columbus, OH/Upper Arlington) finished 6-14 at singles and 5-12 at doubles. Sophomore Scott Triplett (Goshen, KY/St. Xavier) turned in a 5-6 singles record with a 9-8 doubles record. Sophomore Christian Lovelace (Orchard Park, NY/Orchard Park) ended up with a 4-6 doubles record.

The four freshmen on the team all saw action at some point in the season. Ryan Potts (Brookfield, WI/Marquette) finished with a 9-9 singles record while Cameron Bell (Knoxville, TN/Farragut) finished 5-6. Brad Meadors (Dublin, OH/Coffman) went 6-11 at doubles and Kevin Gaughan (Lakeland, FL) notched one victory at both singles and doubles.

The tennis team will return all but one of its athletes for the 2001-02 season, as senior team captain Kyle Bates (Louisville, KY/St. Xavier) graduates. Bates finished 5-7 at singles and 7-11 at doubles.
