Musketeers Drop 6-3 Decision to Hawaii-Hilo
HONOLULU – The Xavier University men’s tennis team fell 6-3 to Hawaii-Hilo, ranked 28th in the latest division two rankings, on Thursday afternoon at the UH Tennis Complex on the University of Hawaii campus. XU drops to 8-10 on the season and posted a 1-3 record during its spring break trip to Honolulu.
Xavier recorded the first point of the match with wins at first and second doubles. At No. 1, Justin Yeager and Rob Simpson picked up an 8-4 win over Jeremy Moitry and Staffan Moritz. In the second position, JR Randall and Jeremy Miller defeated Daniel Pollock and Lars Melskens, 8-5. Brian Schubert and Rustin Reys fell 9-8 (2) to Ned Hayley and Fuyuki Samejima and No. 3. In the first singles spot, Randall was defeated 6-0, 6-1 by Moitry. At No. 2, Miller cruised to a 6-1, 6-1 win over Pollock. In the third spot, Yeager fell 6-3, 6-3 to Moritz. Simpson dropped was forced to retire after two sets at No. 4 versus Mitchel Gelina. At No. 5, Brian Schubert was defeated 6-2, 6-2 by Hayley at the fifth spot and Adam Shaeffer lost in three sets at No. 6 to Patrick Sosnowski. Xavier will return to action on the mainland on Wednesday, March 30 when the Musketeers will head to Dayton for a crucial Atlantic 10 Conference match with the UD Flyers. The match is scheduled for 1:00 p.m. at Dayton Center Courts.
