Musketeers Down Dukes, 4-3

PITTSBURGH, Pa. – The Xavier men’s tennis team improves to 3-0 versus Atlantic 10 Conference competition as the Musketeers posted a 4-3 defeat of host Duquesne on Sunday afternoon at the Oxford Athletic Club. XU moves to 7-6 on the season while the Dukes drop to 0-5.

Xavier took the early 1-0 lead in the match with victories at first and third doubles. At No. 1, Justin Yeager and Rob Simpson teamed up to defeated Michael Ortega and Devon Peightal, 8-3, while Rustin Reys and Brian Schubert recorded an 8-3 decision over Rob Ojeda and Adam Townsend at No. 3. In the second position, JR Randall and Jeremy Miller were defeated 8-3 by Paul Clough and Rodrigo Lacayo.

The Musketeers went on to win three of the six singles matches, two of which came in three sets, to earn the key A-10 win over Duquesne. Junior Rob Simpson recorded XU’s first singles win with a 7-5, 6-0 victory at No. 4 over Clough. Miller followed with a three-set defeat of Lacayo at No. 2, 7-6 (7), 2-6, 6-4. With the score tied at 3-all, freshman Adam Shaeffer pulled out the deciding point for Xavier with a 7-5, 4-6, 6-2 defeat of Ojeda at the sixth position.

XU will return to action on Wednesday, March 16, when the Musketeers will play host to Morehead State.
