Oct. 21, 2005
CINCINNATI - Sophomore midfielder Jimmy Cummings scored his first two goals of the season, including the game-winner late in the first overtime session, to lead the Xavier University men's soccer team to a 2-1 overtime victory over Fordham on Friday evening at the rain-soaked Xavier University Soccer Complex. With the win, XU improves to 3-8-3 on the year and 2-1-2 in the Atlantic 10. Fordham slips to 7-2-4 overall, 1-1-2 in the loop. The Musketeers snapped Fordham's 10-game unbeaten streak on Friday and Cummings' goals were his first since October 24 of last year. XU is now 3-1-1 at home this season. The game-winner came at 98:44. After Xavier advanced the ball into Fordham's defensive third the Rams managed to stop the attack and controlled the ball deep in their box. A Fordham defender attempted to clear the ball but it was intercepted by Cummings who collected the ball and fired a shot top shelf inside the near post to give XU the victory. The match was back-and-forth as each team produced 15 shots with Xavier holding the 7-to-5 edge in shots on goal. Liam Curran allowed just one goal in over 98-minutes of action and made four saves in net for the Musketeers. Justin Burse was also solid between the posts for the Rams, stopping five XU shots. XU got on the board first when Joel Gunnarson headed a ball in the box towards the net. Cummings redirected the shot inside the far post out of the reach of Burse to give XU a 1-0 lead at 52:13. The Rams answered just over one minute later when Fordham's leading scorer Kevin Meyer struck a free kick into the upper right-hand corner from 35-yards out to knot it up at one. The Musketeers are back in action when they take on St. Bonaventure on Sunday. Game time is set for 1:00 p.m. at the XU Soccer Complex and senior day festivities will precede the match.
