Sutherland Scores Second Goal of the Season but Men's Soccer Drops 2-1 Decision at UMass

Oct. 14, 2007

Box Score

AMHERST, Mass. - Sophomore Ricky Sutherland scored a late game-tying goal but Massachusetts answered with the game-winner with less than 10-minutes remaining as the Xavier University men's soccer team lost, 2-1, at UMass on Sunday afternoon.  With the loss, Xavier falls to 4-8-0 on the year, 0-2-2 in Atlantic 10 play.  The Minutemen improve to 7-4-0 overall, 2-0-0 in the loop.

After a scoreless first half, UMass struck first with a goal at the 55:52 mark.  Bryan Hogan netted his third goal of the season when he controlled his own rebound and struck it into the back of the net past a diving Adam Sokolowski.

Sokolowski enjoyed another solid game as he tied a career high with nine saves in 90-minutes of action.

Sutherland's goal, his second of the season, came after he was fouled in the box and earned a penalty kick.  Sutherland was able to convert the PK at 76:09 and the game seemed to be headed into overtime.

However, Hogan scored another goal less than five minutes later when he took a feed from Stuart Amick and slipped it by Sokolowski.

UMass out-shot Xavier by a 14-to-10 count but XU held a 6-to-5 edge in shots in the first half.

The Musketeers return to action on Friday, October 19 when the team travels to the Big Apple to take on Fordham.  Game time is set for 7 p.m.
