CINCINNATI - Xavier closed out the home portion of its schedule with an exceptional team performance to post a 3-1 victory over Purdue in non-conference baseball action at Hayden Field on Wednesday.

The Xavier pitching staff combined to scatter eight Purdue hits as freshman Bill Konecny earned his fifth win of the year allowing just two hits and one walk over 2.0 innings pitched to begin the game.

Classmate Sam Freund picked up where Konecny left off allowing just three hits and two walks while fanning one over the next 3.0 innings to hold the Boilermakers at bay.

Sophomore Mark Grissom stepped to the mound in the sixth and held PU scoreless on just two walks and one base hit.

Freshman Tim Beaver allowed just one Purdue run while striking out three over the next 1.2 innings before giving way to classmate Mike Creevy to close out the game. Creevy earned his team leading sixth save of the season by holding PU hitless over the final 1.1 innings and striking out one batter.

Xavier jumped ahead early with two runs in the first and another in the second to take a 3-0 lead. In the first, freshman leadoff batter Matt Waskerwitz singled to centerfield and moved to second on a ground out providing a RBI opportunity for Johnson. The junior from Crestview Hills, Ky. delivered with a sharp double into the left field corner for his 21st RBI of the year and a 1-0 XU lead. Johnson would come around to score with two outs as Lozan laced a single up the middle to put Xavier ahead 2-0 after one inning.

The Musketeers added another run in the second as Armstrong and Morelli ledoff the doubles down the left and right field lines respectively to chase Purdue starter Andrew Groves and give XU a 3-0 lead.

The Boilermakers scored their lone run in the seventh with a leadoff homer just inside the left field foul pole by Rob Brockel, but Purdue was held in check for the rest of the game as Xavier snapped a five-game losing streak with a 3-1 victory. Overall PU left 15 runners on base including the bases loaded in the third, fifth, sixth and eighth innings.
