Xavier Baseball Drops Pair at George Washington

ARLINGTON, Va. – Visiting Xavier lost two crucial Atlantic 10 games against George Washington on Saturday at Barcroft Park. GW won the opener 6-4 in come from behind fashion and also won game two 11-1.

The Musketeers (13-32, 5-12 A-10) remained in fifth place in the A-10 West Division after Saturday’s Atlantic 10 action but are tied in the loss column with fourth place Dayton. George Washington continued its hold on first place in the A-10 West and now has a 35-14, 17-3 A-10).

In the opener, XU fell behind 2-0 after the first inning, but rebounded to post three runs in the fourth. Senior Jason Morelli drove in freshman Chris Lozan from third with a RBI groundout to the shortstop. Sophomore Matt Lucas then smashed a two-run homer to centerfield, his third round tripper of the season, which gave Xavier a 3-2 lead.

The Colonials tied the score with a solo home run of their own to lead off the bottom of fourth. However, the Musketeers regained the lead on a two-out double down the left field line by junior Brett Smith that scored Johnson from second to put Xavier ahead 4-3 in the top of the fifth.
 

 

GW took the lead back with three runs in the sixth, all scoring after two outs, on a bases-loaded infield single by Matt Owens and a two-run error by the Musketeer defense en route to a 6-4 victory.

The XU offense was led by sophomore Sean Brewer (2-for-4), freshman Jordan Wolf (2-for-4, run) who each had multiple base hits as the Musketeers posted eight hits to the Colonials’ six.

Freshman Bill Konecny suffered the loss despite allowing just four earned runs on five hits while fanning four over 5.1 innings pitched.

In game two, GW posted an 11-1 win while out hitting the Musketeeers 12-5.

Only Lozan had more than one hit for the Musketeers as he was 2-for-3. In fact ], Lozan was the only XU player to have both a hit and a run scored in each game of the doubleheader as he was 1-for-3 with a run scored in the opener.

Johnson also hit safely in both ends of the doubleheader as he was 1-for-3 with a double and a runs scored in the opener and was 1-for-2 in game two to continue his hitting streak to six games, the best active streak by a Musketeer.

Xavier and GW will wrap up their Atlantic 10 series on Sunday with a nine-inning game at noon.
