Dayton Takes Game One 5-4

Homestanding Dayton used a pair of home runs by Shawn Bollinger to earn a 5-4 win over Xavier in Atlantic 10 baseball action on Friday.

The Flyers jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first after a three run poke down the right field line by Shawn Bollinger driving in Andy Boehmer and Aaron Reesh. Bollinger struck again in the bottom of the third with a solo home run to left centerfield giving the Flyers a 4-0 lead.

Junior co-captain Mark Andres (Greenwood, Ind./Center Grove H.S.) got XU on the board in the top of the fifth with a solo home run of his own to right field.

Freshman Brett Smith (Cincinnati, Ohio/Country Day School) followed with a single to give the Musketeers hope for a big inning, but XU then hit into its second double play of the day to end the inning.

The Musketeers would fight back in the sixth when Kevin McKnight and Ryan Schreen led off with consecutive singles bringing up Eric Greenwell. Greenwell hit a texas leaguer to center field allowing Smith to score from third.

Then with one out and runners on first and second, sophomore Alec Moss (Sherman Oaks, Calif./Notre Dame H.S.) ripped a single to right field driving in Schreen from second and moving Greenwell to third base making the score 4-3.

With Andres at the plate, Moss stole second base and the throw could not be caught by the UD shortstop at second base allowing Greenwell to score from third as the ball landed in centerfield, knotting the score at 4-4 through 5 ½ innings.

Dayton got a run back in the bottom of the sixth as Liter hit an RBI single to right field bringing in Bollinger from second base and giving UD a 5-4 lead after six full innings.

Xavier had hope in the seventh as pinch hitter Jarret Sues (Middletown, N.J./Middletown South H.S.) drew a lead off walk, but Xavier then grounded into its third double play of the day and UD reliever Adam Pahs ended the game with a strikeout to give the Flyers a 5-4 win.

Junior Adam Jahnsen (Robertsville, Mo./Forest Park C.C.) got the loss for Xavier after allowing five runs on seven hits while striking out two and walking a pair.

Xavier and Dayton will conclude their series with a doubleheader on Saturday beginning with a seven inning game at noon followed by a nine inning game.
