Musketeers One Hit Spiders In Doubleheader Split
CINCINNATI - Xavier and Richmond split an Atlantic 10 baseball doubleheader on Saturday at Hayden Field. UR won the opener 5-2, but XU came back to one-hit the Spiders in game two and win 4-0.
Xavier (13-29, 5-9 A-10) and Richmond (22-17, 10-4 A-10) will conclude their three-game series on Sunday at Hayden Field. The game will begin immediately after Senior Day ceremonies, which are scheduled to begin at 11:30 a.m. Richmond took the opener 5-2 behind a three-run homer by A.J. Board who was one of three Spiders to post multiple hits in the game. Board was 2-for-4 including his fifth home run of the season. The Musketeers had six hits of their own as junior Brett Smith led the way going 2-for-3 with a run scored and a RBI as part of a two-run XU rally in the sixth inning. Freshman starter Bill Konecny suffered the loss for Xavier despite allowing just three earned runs on six hits while striking out three batters over 6.0 innings. Classmate Tim Beaver pitched an impressive seventh inning to finish the game on the mound for the Musketeers. Beaver allowed just one hit while fanning two in the final frame. Solid Musketeer pitching carried over into the second game as freshmen Sam Freund and Mike Creevy combined to shutout the two-time A-10 West Division Champion Spiders 4-0. Freund threw 5.0 no-hit innings before surrendering his only hit of the game, a bloop single over the right side of the infield, in the beginning of the sixth inning. Freund also made good use of his defense as he struck out just one batter in 6.0 innings of work. Creevy closed the door in the final inning as he struck out two to finish Xavier's second shutout of the season. The Musketeers got a bulk of their offense off the bat of sophomore Sean Brewer who was 2-for-3 with a solo home run to leadoff the second inning, his second roundtripper of the season. XU posted a run in each of the first four innings to give Freund plenty of run support. Xavier's scoring began in the first as junior Jay Johnson ledoff with a single and worked his way to second on a groundout and a passed ball. He would then score on a groundout to first by sophomore Matt Lucas for a 1-0 XU lead. After Brewer's home run put Xavier up 2-0, the Musketeers added another run in the third as freshman Jordan Wolf walked and moved to third on a single by senior co-captain Alec Moss. Lucas came through on the RBI opportunity again as he hit a single off the left field wall, driving in Wolf for a 3-0 Musketeer advantage. Xavier added its fourth run in the fourth as Johnson used a sacrifice fly to right field to drive home junior Steve Sakosits and put XU ahead 4-0.
