Sues Shuts Out #15 Richmond, 1-0

RICHMOND, Va. - Senior Jarret Sues threw his first complete game shutout of the season as visting Xavier defeated #15 Richmond, 1-0 in the first game of a Saturday Atlantic 10 doubleheader at Pitt Field.

The win was the seventh straight in A-10 play for XU who improved to 18-19-2 overall and 9-4 in the conference. The Spiders dropped to 31-8 overall and 12-3 in the Atlantic 10.

Sues threw his first complete game shutout of the season and lifted his record to 3-1 on the season after allowing just three hits while striking out four and walking four. The shutout is the third by the Musketeer pitching staff in its last six A-10 games.

In a game that lasted just 1:25, each team only had multiple runners on base once throughout the contest. In the top of thr third, senior Matt Tedford and junior Eric Armstrong had consecutive one-out singles, but UR All-American starter Tim Stauffer induced a pair of ground outs to get out of the jam.

In the bottom of the fifth, the Spiders got things going as Adam Tidball and Bobby LeNoir drew a pair of two-out walks, but Sues then got Bryan Pritz to foul out to end the inning.

XU senior second baseman Eric Grennwell tallied the lone run of the game in the sixth as he ledoff the inning with his first home run of the season to right field, giving Xavier a 1-0 lead.

David Reaver opened up the Richmond half of the sixth with a walk. He then advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Ben Zeskind. After a flyout to right by Jim Fasano, senior All-American Vito Chiaravalloti came to bat against fellow Middletown, N.J. native Sues. The two battled throughout the at bat before Chiaravalloti smashed a ball to centerfield that was caught midway up the wall by sophomore Jay Johnson.

UR's Stauffer suffered the loss at the hands of Xavier for the second straight season after allowing just five hits while striking out five and walking none in a complete game performance.
