Richmond Takes Finale of Three Game Series at Xavier

CINCINNATI - Led by a pair of 3-for-4 days by David Reaver and Vito Chiaravalloti, Richmond won game three of the weekend series against Xavier, 7-3 at Hayden Field on Saturday.

With the win, first place Richmond improves to 35-6 overall and 13-1 in the A-10. Xavier falls to 21-18 overall and second place in the A-10 West Division at 11-3.

The Spiders jumped out to a 3-0 lead with a two runs in the first and another in the third, but Xavier answered back with three of its own in the bottom of the fourth on two hits and a pair of wild pitches by UR starter Thomas Martin.

In the top of the fourth, the Spiders came back with three of their own after XU starter Jarret Sues (Middletown, N.J./Middletown South H.S.) allowed Reaver to score from second on a Chiaravalloti single to right centerfield before giving way to reliever Kevin Crowley (Wheaton, Ill./Germantown (Tenn.) H.S.).

Richmond's Adam Tidball put the game out of reach for Xavier as he hit Crowley's first pitch over the left field wall to make the score 6-3 through 4 1/2 innings.

A trio of relievers came closed out the game for the Spiders and allowed just one hit in the final four innings of the game.

The lone bright spot for Xavier offensively was freshman Brett Smith (Cincinnati, Ohio/Country Day School) who was XU's only player with multiple base hits as he went 2-for-4.

Xavier returns to action on Tuesday as they travel to Terre Haute, Ind. to take on Indiana State in a 4 p.m. ET game.
