Xavier Baseball Falters Against Kentucky 13-4

The Xavier baseball team (7-19) dropped its seventh straight game today, this time to the Kentucky Wildcats (12-15). It was the second time in as many days that Xavier pitching has given up at least 20 hits.

Kentucky came out smoking, scoring two runs in each of the first two innings while giving up no hits to the Musketeers. In fact, XU could not get across home plate until the bottom of the fifth inning. By then, UK led 6-0.

In that Xavier fifth, XU scored three runs on one hit and an error. One run scored when Matt Tedford (Norwood, OH) ran home on a wild pitch. Eric Greenwell (Bridgeton, MO), who reached base thanks to an error by the first baseman, scored from third when Jeff Crandell (Lothian, MD) grounded out . Mark Andres, who walked, later scored on a Ty Brenning (Urbana, OH) sacrifice fly.

But the Kentucky hitters were relentless. The Wildcats added five runs in the seventh with a homer and four hits. They increased the lead to 10 in the eighth, scoring two more runs on four more hits.

The Musketeers posted one run in the ninth inning, leading to the final score of 13-4. Junior Greg Wiggers (Mantua, OH) (2-4) went six innings and gave up 15 hits and eight runs, suffering the loss.

Xavier will venture to Richmond, Indiana this weekend to battle Butler, Dayton and Detroit. XU will face Butler at 3:00 p.m. on Friday, Detroit at 11:00 a.m. Saturday and Dayton at 3:00 p.m. on Sunday.
