Xavier Swimming Takes on Marshall and West Virginia

CINCINNATI - Xavier's men's and women's swim team traveled to Huntington, W.Va., on Friday to compete in a double duel meet with West Virginia and the host Thundering Herd. The Musketeers fell in both contests as the men fell 83-126 to West Virginia with the women losing 95-126 to the Mountaineers and 62-173 to Marshall.

In the women's competition, sophomore Krystel Kooyman took top honors in the 200 Backstroke with a time of 2:26.40. Sophomore Jill Cooke broke the school record in the 1000 Free with a time of 10:34.35, as she broke the record by .63 seconds. Cooke finished in fourth place in the event, while also placing third in the 200 Butterfly with a time of 2:13.86. Classmate Dana Hunter grabbed third place honors in the 100-yard Free with a 54.89 seconds time, and she came in fourth place in the 200 Free with a time of 1:59.20. Also in the 100-yard Free, junior Sarah Brown notched a 55.94 seconds time to finish in fifth place. Senior Janet Heil came in just behind Cooke in the 200 Butterfly to finish with a time of 2:16.28, good for a fifth place finish.

On the men's side, freshman Nico Lilly continued to open eyes as he grabbed two top spots in the 500 and 1000 Free events. Lilly posted times of 4:50.55 in the 500 Free and 9:50.59 in the 1000 Free, which was 13 seconds ahead of the second place finisher. Classmate John Becker grabbed a third and fourth place finish in the 500 Free and the 200 Free with times of 5:02.20 and 1:51.73, respectively. In the 200 Butterfly, XU's Neil Reierson took second place with a time of 2:00.40, while junior Kyle Hawley came in fourth behind a time of 2:02.30. Finally, in the 200 Breast, the Musketeers grabbed the top four spots with freshman Algis Aukstuolis leading the way with a time of 2:20.27. He was followed by sophomore Joe Conklin (2:22.15), sophomore Sam Cutter-Wilson (2:23.81), and sophomore Jonathon Higley (2:31.13). Cutter-Wilson also notched a third place mark in the 400 IM with a time of 4:17.07.

Xavier swimming will return to action next Saturday, October 30, as they travel to Eastern Illinois for a 1:00 p.m. meet.
