Men's and Women's Swimming Improves Position at A-10 Championships

Men's and Women's Swimming Improves Position at A-10 Championships

02/21/2003

Buffalo, N.Y - After the second day of swimming at the 2003 Atlantic 10 Swimming and Diving Championships, the Xavier men are in fifth place with 234 points trailing fourth place George Washington by only one point. The women's team is currently in eighth with a point total of 169. The men would be in third if diving points were excluded as Xavier does not have any divers as part of the team. The men's current standing of fifth place is the highest that Xavier has been in its history at the Championships.

The Musketeers continued the re-writing of the record books this evening as six school records were broken at Friday's finals.

The men started the record breaking in the 200 Medley Relay with David Janszen (Cincinnati/St. Xavier), Matt Young (Mt. Washington, Ky./St. Xavier), Brad Rodecker (Fisher, Ind./Southeastern), and Dan Milheim (Cenerville, Ohio/Centerville) as they finished sixth with a time of 1:36.29. The previous record time of 1:36.64 was set in 1998.

Freshman David Janszen also chipped as an individual performer this evening as he set a new record in the 100 Butterfly (51.15) on his way to a sixth place finish.

Sarah Blush (Brighton, Mich./Brighton) came on strong in the 100 Breaststroke with a ninth place finish and breaking her previous record as finished in 1:06.64.

In the women's 100 Backstroke, junior Molly Moeller (Fort Wayne, Ind./Homestead) also broke her own school record with a time of 58.02 en route to a fourth place finish.

Both the men's and women's teams broke school records in the 800 Freestyle Relay. First, the women's relay of Janet Heil (Fort Mitchell, Ky./Notre Dame Academy), Veronica Henry (Columbus, Ind./Columbus North), Sarah Brown (Raleigh, N.C./Cardinal Gibbons), and Heather Greidanus (Pewaukee, Wisc./Arrowhead) set a new record as they finished ninth with a time of 7:56.43.

The men's 800 Free Relay of Kyle Hawley (Appleton, Wisc./Appleton North), Matt Normile (St. Louis, Mo./DeSmet Jesuit), Matt Young, and John Janszen (Cincinnati/St. Xavier) closed out the night as the broke the final record of the night with a fourth place finish in 6:57.58.

Other performances to note on the men's side were: Matt Young fourth in the 400 IM (4:06.34), Kyle Hawley seventh in the 200 Freestyle (1:43.20), David Janszen fifth in the 100 Backstroke (52.36), and John Janszen finished seventh in the 100 Back (53.05).

On the women's side, Becky Faust (St. Louis, Mo./Cor Jesu Academy) finished eighth in the 400 IM (4:39.79), Angie Hinrichs (Cincinnati/St. Xavier) was tenth in the 200 Freestyle (1:55.97), Danielle Miller (Middletown, Ohio/Lakota East) finished fifth in the 100 Breaststroke (1:06.97), and freshman Sarah Brown came in 12th in the 100 Butterfly with a time of 59.60.
