Two Pool Records Fall in XU Swim Meet
CINCINNATI - With inclement weather making travel tough, Senior Day at the O'Connor Sports Center pool and the meet between Xavier and Denison took a bit of a twist. The home pool advantage benefited both teams as XU took to the O'Connor Sports Center pool and DU swam in the friendly waters of their pool in Granville, Ohio. After the times were compared, the Xavier men defeated the #3 ranked Big Red, 88-25, while the Xavier women lost to the 8th ranked team in NCAA Division III, 62-51.
Senior Matt Young finished his last home meet strong establishing a new pool record in the 200 Breast in a time of 2:11.42. Young also took top honors in the 100 Breast (1:00.73) and the 400 IM (4:09.66). Junior Kyle Hawley nabbed the top spot in the 200 Free (1:45.86) and came away with second place finishes in the 200 Back (1:57.37) and 400 IM (4:18.03). Classmate Dan Milheim had a first place finish in the 100 Free (48.78) and claimed second in the 50 Free (22.36). The sophomore duo of Neil Reierson and Mike Thallemer combined for three first place finishes on the afternoon. Reierson took the top spots in the 100 (54.60) and 200 Fly (2:00.12), while Thallemer finished on top in the 100 Back (53.92) and grabbed third in the 200 Back (1:59.77). Freshman Matt Krouse followed Thallemer in the 100 Back to take second in a time of 55.15.
Becky Faust also left her mark at the O'Connor pool and made her last home meet one to remember by establishing a new pool record in the 400 IM with a time of 4:37.46. The senior also earned third place in the 100 Breast as she followed teammates Krystel Kooyman and Sarah Blush, who took first and second place, respectively. Kooyman seized top honors in the 200 Breast as well, in a time of 2:28.52. Senior Janet Heil finished first in the 200 Fly with a time of 2:10.81 and second in the 400 IM with a time of 4:41.79. Classmate Blush followed up her second place finish in the 100 Breast with a third place finish in the 200 Breast in a time of 2:33.23. Sophomores Dana Hunter and Jill Cooke rounded out the top finishers for the women. Hunter swam the 500 Free in 5:15.92, while Cooke completed the 200 Free in a time of 1:58.49.
The XU men had the top finisher in 10 of the 13 events on the day, including taking the top spots in both relays. The team of Thallemer, Young, Reierson and Milheim took the 200 Medley in a time of 1:38.53. In the 200 Free relay, the team of Krouse, Reierson, Thallemer and Milheim finished in a time of 1:28.50.
Xavier will travel to the University of Indianapolis to compete in the University of Indianapolis Invite next Saturday, January 29. The first splash is set for 1:00 p.m., as XU will take on the host University of Indianapolis, Wabash and Denison.
NOTE: Today was the last home meet for seven seniors. Sarah Blush, Becky Faust, Janet Heil, Maureen Hubbard, John Krieger, Kristy Ulrich and Matt Young were all honored before today's meet. Thank you all for your hard work and dedication to Xavier swimming and best of luck in the future.
