GVSU Beats Wayne State For Second-Straight Time, 5-2, in GLIAC Championships

Midland, Mich. - Grand Valley State defeated Wayne State for the second-straight time as the #2 Lakers beat the #7 Warriors 5-2 in the opening round of the GLIAC Championships Friday afternoon in Midland. With the loss, WSU falls into the Loser Bracket Semifinals later this afternoon, while GVSU advances to the Tournament Semifinals.

Wayne State will play Michigan Tech, a 5-2 loser against Ferris State. The Warriors lost at Michigan Tech earlier this season, 7-2.

Grand Valley won three of the four singles matches as the top two singles matches did not finish. The Lakers also took two of three doubles matches to advance.

Senior Dee Mays (Detroit, Mich./Utica) was the lone Warrior sinlges victor, as she defeated Emily Zellner in No. 4 singles, 6-2, 6-0.

The only other win for Wayne State came in #3 doubles, as the team of sophomore Sargam Bhatt (Canton, Mich./Taylor Truman) and freshman Meghan Luzod (Royal Oak, Mich.Dondero) defeated the team of Jenna Killips and Jaime Oppenlander, 8-5.

The No. 2 doubles team of seniors Colette Cabot (Fruitport, Mich./Fruitport) and Amanda Pressotto (Trenton, Mich./Trenton) lost a tough 9-7 set to Audrey Koopsen and McCall Monte.
