Midland, Mich. - The Wayne State University softball team (38-14 overall) scored twice in the bottom of the 10th to edge Mercyhurst College (23-23) in a loser's bracket game Saturday morning at Emerson Park.

The Warriors grabbed a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first as Lindsey Perry (Taylor, Mich./Kennedy) had a leadoff single to right on a 1-2 pitch. Sarah Kish (St. Catharines, Ont.) had a sacrifice bunt with Perry advancing to third on a passed ball. Meredith Boxberger's (Plymouth, Mich.) infield single scored Perry.

The Lakers tied the game in the second on two singles and a Warrior throwing error.

Neither team was able to score through regulation or in the eighth or ninth innings as WSU starter Molly Yetman (Cambridge, Ont.) and MC hurler Jen Feret both provided strong pitching performances.

In the top of the 10th using the international tie breaker, MC's leadoff batter laid down a sacrifice bunt to advance the runner to third. A fielder's choice scored the runner, and a double put runners on second and third. Jessica McNurlen's flyout to left field turned into a double play as WSU's Boxberger's throw home nailed the runner.

In the bottom of the 10th, pinch-runner Laura Guzman (Royal Oak, Mich./Bishop Foley) was placed on second. Lisa Seymour (Davison, Mich.) reached on a bunt single and Stephanie LeClair's (Kitchener, Ont.) sacrifice bunt advanced both runners. Katie Golub's (Lansing, Mich./Grand Ledge) groundout scored Guzman with the tying run. Amanda Van't Wout (Guelph, Ont.) then reached on a throwing error with Seymour scoring the winning run.

All five runs in the contest were unearned with Yetman recording 11 strikeouts and no walks. Feret had five strikeouts and no walks.

Wayne State advances to play Saginaw Valley, who defeated Ferris State 2-1 in another loser's bracket contest.
