DETROIT - The 25th-ranked Wayne State University softball team (35-13 overall, 14-5 GLIAC) moved into a tie-for-first place with Ferris State (28-12 overall, 14-5 GLIAC) by virtue of its 1-0 10 inning triumph over the Bulldogs in game one of Sunday's GLIAC doubleheader at the WSU Softball Stadium.
In a pitchers duel between two of the top hurlers in the conference, WSU junior Molly Yetman (Cambridge, Ont.) went 10 scoreless innings to extend her scoreless streak to 32 innings. She has allowed one run in the last 68 innings.
FSU pitcher Sarah Mueller allowed just the international tie-breaker runner in her 9.2 innings of work. Mueller had two strikeouts and two walks, while Yetman recorded 16 strikeouts and two walks in earning her league-leading 14th shutout of the season. Only one GLIAC team (Ferris) has more shutouts than Yetman.
In the bottom of the 10th, Stephanie LeClair (Kitchener, Ont.) was placed on second. Amanda Van't Wout (Guelph, Ont.) bunted her to third and Lauren Warkentien's (East China, Mich./Marine City) hard grounder between first and second scored LeClair with the only run of the contest.
Each team left seven runners on base. From the fourth into the ninth inning, Yetman retired 16 consecutive Bulldog hitters. FSU left two runners on in both the first and ninth innings.
WSU's best chance to score came in the fifth when Lisa Seymour (Davison, Mich.) had a leadoff single and LeClair reached on a fielder's choice, but the next three hitters were retired.
