DETROIT - The Wayne State University men's basketball squad (2-3 overall) won its second consecutive home non-league contest with a 72-59 triumph over visiting Clarion University (1-1 overall) Monday evening at the Matthaei.

The visiting Golden Eagles scored in the first 30 seconds of the contest on a lay-up by Leon Kennedy for their only lead of the match. Fifteen seconds later a Wynn Sarden (Sterling Hts., Mich./Warren Cousino) lay-up tied the game and after each team turned the ball over, senior guard Joe Carr (Detroit, Mich./Renaissance) drained a triple for a 5-2 Warrior advantage at the 17:48 mark.

Another lay-up by Kennedy pulled CU within a point at 5-4, but senior Will Pierce (Detroit, Mich./Renaissance) responded with a three-pointer giving the hosts an 8-4 lead at the 15:57 mark. Following a Clarion miss, senior Kris Krzyminski (Flint, Mich./Central) drained a trip for a seven-point advantage and the Warriors never led by less than three the rest of the contest.

After the Golden Eagles made it a 16-13 WSU lead at the 11:58 mark, Pierce hit another three-pointer. Following two consecutive CU turnovers, Krzyminski's triple gave the Warriors a nine-point advantage at 22-13.

Wayne State led by as many as 14 (29-15) in the first half, and by nine (37-28) at the break. Krzyminski had 19 points at intermission on seven-of-nine from the floor, including three-of-four from downtown. Kennedy scored a team-best 14 points for Clarion during the first 20 minutes.

The Golden Eagles pulled within five points three times in the second half, but each time WSU was the next squad to score. After the last five-point lead (42-37) at the 15:48 mark, Wayne State scored five straight points on a lay-up by Jason Saddler (Detroit, Mich./Cody) and a triple by Krzyminski.

Wayne State improved to 46-19 at home under head coach David Greer including a 16-3 mark at the Matthaei against non-GLIAC schools.

Krzyminski scored a career-high for the second consecutive contest this time pouring in 32 points on 12 of 16 from the floor including six of seven from beyond the arc.
