DETROIT - The Wayne State University men's basketball squad (9-10 overall, 5-6 GLIAC) kept the fifth-ranked Findlay Oilers (19-1 overall, 12-0 GLIAC) eight points under its scoring average but could not pull off the upset before the largest Matthaei crowd since Dec. 6, 2003.
Junior Wynn Sarden's (Sterling Hts., Mich./Warren Cousino) lay-up on a pass from Jason Saddler (Detroit, Mich./Cody) just over 90 seconds into the contest tied it at 2, but the Oilers scored five of the next seven points for a 7-4 lead. Back-to-back buckets by Sarden kept the deficit at one, as UF responded with a hoop every time WSU scored.
Findlay had a 15-8 lead following a lay-up by Frank Phillips at the 13:37 mark, but Wayne State tallied five of the next seven points on a jumper by Sarden and a three-pointer by senior Kris Krzyminski (Flint, Mich./Central) to make it a four-point game.
The Oilers scored the next nine points to build a 13-point advantage, but the Warriors never quit and had an 11-2 run just before intermission cutting the deficit to four until UF's Brent Schnipke's lay-up in the final 30 seconds.
A triple by senior Joe Carr (Detroit, Mich./Renaissance) and a "scoop" lay-up by Krzyminski pulled the Warriors within one at 33-32 at the 17:34 mark. Findlay answered with the next five points.
Wayne State was able to get within three at 51-48 following a lay-up by Saddler with 10:26 left, but UF again scored the next five points. WSU was never able to get closer than eight points the rest of the way.
Wayne State is currently fourth in the GLIAC South Division, one game behind second place squads Ashland and Mercyhurst. The Warriors conclude the regular-season series with the Ashland Eagles on Saturday at the Matthaei. Tip-off is slated for 3 p.m. on the WSU campus.
