FT. MYERS, Fla. - The Wayne State baseball team (11-3) won its ninth game at the Gene Cusic Classic, an 8-3 decision over Nebraska-Omaha (8-11) on Saturday morning.
Derek Ranck (Clarkston, Mich.) went 2-for-4, his sixth multi-hit performance in the last seven games, and Brett Witczak (Hudsonville, Mich.) smacked a solo homer, his first in a Wayne State uniform, to right center in the first inning. Tony Hines (Detroit, Mich./Mumford) and Ryan LaPensee (LaSalle, Ont./St. Thomas of Villanova) each had a pair of hits as well.
Down 2-1 in the third, Wayne State tied the game on an RBI triple off the wall in center field by Hines scoring Caleb Dalman (Hudsonville, Mich.).
Ranck led off the fourth with a base hit and, after Kevin Kadrofske (Roseville, Mich./Lutheran East) was hit by a pitch, LaPensee doubled down the right field line, plating Ranck. Kadrofske would score on a bunt single by Dalman to give the Warriors a 4-2 advantage.
The Warriors loaded the bases in the sixth on a base hit by Kadrofske and walks to LaPensee and Dalman, setting up Matthew Williams (Detroit, Mich./Royal Oak Shrine) for a two-run single to center.
Hines hit his fifth home run of the season with the bases empty in the seventh, and the Warriors added an unearned run in the eighth to make it an 8-2 game.
Dan Barnes (Grand Ledge, Mich.) pitched his third complete game in as many starts and improved to 3-0 on the year. He surrendered just three runs (one earned) on seven hits, walking three and striking out two.
Wayne State and Nebraska-Omaha will meet again Sunday morning at 9:00 a.m. in the Warriors' final Spring Break game before returning home to Detroit.
