Wyoming Volleyball Gets Win over Lobos

LARAMIE, Wyo. - Box Score in PDF Format The Wyoming Cowgirl Volleyball team (13-14 overall, 7-9 MWC) closed out regular season conference play with an impressive three game win (30-26, 30-23, 30-18) against the New Mexico Lobos (9-19 overall, 5-11 MWC) on Saturday afternoon in Laramie. "This is a great way to finish out the home stand, especially for our two seniors, Andrea Seele and Sara Hinrichs," said head coach Pat Stangle. "The win gives us a fifth place finish in the league, which was big. You finish below that and suddenly you are playing BYU, CSU and Utah. It doesn't make UNLV any easier. They are a very good team." Wyoming was led by junior outside hitter Rachel Smith, who recorded a match high 14 kills, while adding four digs, two block assists and a .216 (14-6-37) hitting percentage. Senior Andrea Seele finished with 13 kills, two block assists and hit a team high .500 (13-3-20) while freshman Annie Meyers recorded ten kills. Meyers and libero Samantha Eley both finished with 13 digs. The Cowgirls hit .229 (54-24-131) for the match and had 49 digs and four total team blocks.
New Mexico was led by Kelly Therkelsen who had 11 kills, eight digs and three block assists. She was followed by Rose Morris with nine and Jeanne Fairchild with eight. The Lobos hit .101 (33-22-109) for the match and had seven total team blocks.
New Mexico took an early 5-3 lead in game one, but Wyoming scored four straight to gain a two point advantage, 7-5. The Lobos responded with a 5-2 run to go ahead 10-9. Over the next several points there were five ties and four lead changes as the Cowgirls would finally take a 17-14 lead. UNM would battle back and score the next seven of eight to take a 21-18 lead. Wyoming hung tough and made a 6-3 run to tie it up at 24, and would run off the next six straight to get game point at 29-24. They would hold off the Lobos to win the first game 30-26. After falling behind 3-1, the Cowgirls went on a 6-3 run to take a 7-6 lead. The two teams traded points back and forth with neither one taking a significant lead. With it all even at 13, Wyoming ran off five straight points to take an 18-13 lead. They extended that to eight points, 22-14, by scoring the next four of five. UNM scored a couple of points to pull within five, 22-17, but the Cowgirls held on and closed it out on an 8-6 run to win the game 30-23. In game three, the Cowgirls opened up a 5-2 lead, but New Mexico answered with four straight to go up 6-5. Wyoming came back with a 7-2 run to go up 12-8. They would extend that lead to double-figures, 23-13, with an 11-5 run. The Cowgirls closed it out by scoring 7 of the final 12 to win the game 30-18 and the match 3-0. Wyoming will now head to the MWC Championships as the fifth seed, and will take on the fourth seeded UNLV Rebels, on Thursday, Nov. 23, at 5:00 p.m. MT.
