LARAMIE, Wyo. -

Denver def. WYOMING 3-2 - Box Score

The Wyoming Cowgirl Volleyball Team (6-7 overall, 1-3 in the MWC) opened up their week with a non-conference loss to the the Denver Pioneers (7-8 overall, 2-3 in the Sunbelt) on Tuesday night, 3-2. Despite being up 2-0 in the match, (30-22 and 30-27), they would fall in three consecutive, 28-30, 26-30 and 10-15.

The Cowgirls would take an early 7-3 lead to begin game one, but Denver quickly came back to narrow the gap to 7-6. Wyoming would maintain an advantage, despite the Pioneers staying close behind. With the score at 19-11, the Cowgirls took control and closed out the game, 30-22.

Game two started out very similar to the first with the Cowgirls taking the early lead, 6-1, and Denver coming back and hanging around. Despite DU tieing the game at 26-26, Wyoming would take the game 30-27 and a 2-0 lead in the match.

Denver came out fired up in the third game holding a lead throughout including their largest of four points. With the scored tied at 25-25, the Pioneers took a two point lead and would go onto win the game 30-28.

Wyoming seemed to regain some of their intensity in the fourth going up 5-2, but like in previous times in the match Denver would come back. The Pioneers would go on an 8-4 run to take the 20-15 lead and to control of the game winning 30-26.

In the fifth and deciding game, the Cowgirls went ahead 6-2 and seemed to be in a grove, unfortunately the Pioneers had an answer taking the lead 8-7. It was back and forth until the scored tied at nine when DU would go on a 6-1 run to win the game 15-10 and the match 3-2.

Freshman Sara Maytorena had a career night with 17 kills, along with hitting .233 (17-7-43) and finishing with ten digs. Despite outhitting the Pioneers .158 to .137, the Cowgirls were outblocked 10-12.

"There is no doubt Denver outworked us, and wanted the match much more than we did," said Susan Steadman. "I am extremely disappointed in our effort both physically and mentally. We have consistently performed at a high level all season, and we did not seize the opportunity to win another match tonight. We have relied on specific individuals throughout the season, and they did not show up tonight. The next two practices are crucial in rebounding for Air Force and New Mexico."

The Cowgirls will now travel to play Air Force, on Friday night, at 5:00 p.m., and then New Mexico, on Saturday night, at 7:00 p.m.
