SAN ANTONIO, Texas - The Cowgirl tennis team opened up their first day of competition at the UTSA Invitational, on Friday, in San Antonio, Texas.

Five Cowgirls started off the tournament on a good note by going undefeated in singles play. Senior Yuliani Santi defeated Elysia Sloan of UT Pan Am in straight sets, 6-0, 6-0, and Tina Klemenc of Texas State, 7-6, 6-2, while sophomore Patricia Chien earned two victories by defeating Medeja Egic of Lee College, 6-3, 6-2, and Melanie Hall of Texas State in three sets, 6-4, 4-6, 6-4. Both Amy Senko and Andrea House earned victories on the day. Senko defeated Katie Felder of Texas State, 6-3, 6-1, and was set to play Jaime Doty of Tyler JC in a later match. House earned wins over Celena Cortez of Laredo JC and Ana Paula Soto of Texas San Antonio. In her only match of the day, sophomore Gwen Moser defeated Laura Gomez of Texas State, 7-5, 6-2.

In other singles play, Jennifer Hancock rebounded with a 6-2, 6-0 win against Angelica Padilla of Tyler JC after falling to Brooke Mills of Tyler JC, 3-6, 6-4, 6-2 earlier in the day. Sophomore Megan Williams won her opening match, 6-0, 6-0, against Kelsey Gist of Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, but came up short in the semifinal match against Margaret Potyrala of Texas State, 6-1, 6-1. Finally, freshman Karolina Rowinski fell short in her match against Catalina Castillo of Tyler JC in three sets, 6-1,1-6, 6-2.

In doubles play, Wyoming went 4-0 on the day. The team of Hancock and Santi won 8-3 over Hedinger and Pena of UT Pan Am as did Megan Williams and Andrea House over the team of Janak and Schneider of Lee College. Karolina Rowinski and Patricia Chien earned an 8-0 win over Ortiz and Montiel of Laredo JC, and Gwen Moser and Amy Senko defeated Shelly and Sandoval of Lee College, 9-8. All of the Cowgirls will be in action tomorrow.

The Cowgirls will continue play at the tournament on both Friday and Saturday.
