Cowgirl Tennis Bows 5-2 to Nationally Ranked SMU
March 13, 2002
Laramie, Wyo. - Despite a valiant effort the University of Wyoming women's tennis team dropped its first home match of the spring Wednesday, a 5-2 decision in dual play to no. 62 Southern Methodist University at the UW Indoor Tennis Complex. "We can play right with these ranked teams and we showed that again tonight," Cowgirl coach Pam Wildt said. "We've struggled with injuries all year and we're still not at full strength. SMU is a good team and we were still right with them." The match got off to a promising start for the Cowgirls with sophomores Jenny Bowman and Jen Hancock defeating SMU's Kit Carson and Jenny Langer 8-4 in number-one doubles. "Both of them are playing really well right now," Wildt said of the duo that now stands 11-3 on the season in number-one doubles action. "Jenny Bowman is just one of a kind. She's such a competitor and she always does whatever it takes to get the job done. That attitude has really helped Jen (Hancock). She's playing with a lot of confidence right now." The Mustangs, however, stormed back to take both the number-two and number-three doubles matches and establish a 1-0 lead. Lynsie Jones and Sana Cortas topped Cowgirls Paulina del Monte and Yuliani Santi 8-6 in the second position while Allison Leuszler and Siayareh Rambally beat Kati Gyulai and Ivana Milosevic 8-3 in number-three doubles. The Cowgirls tied the affair at 1-1 with Bowman's 6-3, 6-1 win over Carson in number-one singles play. The victory pushed Bowman's record to a sterling 14-3 on the season and extended her winning streak to six straight matches. "I didn't feel like I played great tennis today," Bowman said. "I think the altitude kind of had an effect and she got a little tired. I just did what I needed to do to get the win."
Hancock picked up UW's other singles win with a dramatic
7-5, 6-7, 6-2 three-set thriller over Leuszler in the
number-three position.
"I finally woke up a little in the third set," Hancock said. "I made some mistakes in the second set, but I played better and definitely hit some better shots in the third." SMU's Langer topped Santi 6-4, 6-4 in number-two singles, Jones beat del Monte 6-3, 6-1 in the number-four spot, Rambally topped Gyulai 6-2, 6-1 in number-five singles and Cortas won at the number-six spot, beating Milosevic 6-0, 6-1. "We're right on the edge of beating these ranked teams," Wildt said. "We just need one good win to push us over that hump." COMPLETE MATCH RESULTS
