Cowboys Finish Second After Two-Rounds of Play at the Diet Pepsi Shocker Classic
April 8, 2002
LARAMIE, Wyo. -
Rainy conditions did not slow down the Wyoming Cowboy golf team Monday in Wichita, Kan., as the Pokes would shoot a 36-hole total of 584, 16-over par, on the first day of competition at the Diet Pepsi Shocker Classic. The two-round total puts the Cowboys in second-place behind Texas-San Antonio who shot a 570, 2-over par. Wyoming was led by senior Mike Urbatchka who finished 2-under par, 140. Urbatchka started strong firing a first-round total of 68 followed by a solid round of 72, finishing six strokes behind leader Gibby Martens (134) of Texas-San Antonio. "We feel real good about our rounds today," said Wyoming head men's golf coach Joe Jensen. "The weather was, awful and it rained hard all day so it was good to have a good low round. We're slowly starting to believe in ourselves and believe we can compete with some really good teams. "We had some good senior leadership today from Mike Urbatchka. As always he is just playing solid for us, he's our catalyst and I'm really looking for him to finish the year strong and possibly earn a spot in the NCAA Tournament." UW sophomore Mike Mezei put in a solid two-rounds finishing the day tied for 10th with a three-over par 145. Mezei was in second overall at the conclusion of one-round after firing a 69. Freshman Jonathan Shuss sits in a tie for 15th shooting a 147, five-over par, junior Kurt Kowaluk is in a tie for 34th with a 10-over par, 152 and freshman Matthew Brunk sits in a tie for 55th with a 14-over par, 156. "We're in a good position and I have to keep reminding the guys of that Our goal coming here was to place in the top three and we're closing in on that. We're a young team and I'm very interested to see how we'll do with one more big round tomorrow." Jensen said. The Diet Pepsi Shocker Classic is being played at the Crestview Country
Club South in Wichita, Kan. The course plays to a par of 71 and
measures 6,671 yards.
The final 18-holes of competition will be played on Tuesday afternoon. Wyoming Individual Results |
