LOMPOC, Calif. -

With a final round of 306, the Wyoming Cowboys moved up one spot on the final day of the University of California Santa Barbara Bite/Pacific Coast Intercollegiate to tie for 16th place with San Jose State. The Cowboys and Spartans both ended the 54-hole event with 61-over par totals of 925. The University of California Davis won the team championship by three strokes over the University of California Riverside -- 881 to 884.

Wyoming's top individual finisher was junior Matthew Brunk who tied for 37th place with a 12-over par score of 228. Travis Bertoni of Cal Poly captured the individual medalist honors, shooting a three-under par total of 213. He defeated Brian Thornburg of New Mexico State by one stroke. Thornburg shot a two-under 214 total for three rounds.

"We played better the second and third rounds, and we had a couple of players really finish up strong," said UW men's golf coach Joe Jensen. "Matthew (Brunk) and Jeff (Franks) both shot 74 today, which was a good score on this golf course.

"Jason (Aichele), who was our most consistent player the first couple of rounds, had an opportunity to have a really nice tournament, but he went through a bad stretch the last five or six holes. I know he was disappointed he didn't finish stronger.

"I chose to have our team play in this tournament because it has a number of outstanding teams -- a number of teams that will end up playing in the NCAA Regionals at the end of the season. I still think it is good for our players to compete against the best, but when you compete against this level of competition it doesn't allow any room for a bad round."

This year's UC Santa Barbara Intercollegiate was played at the LaPurisima Golf Club in Lompoc, Calif. The LaPurisima Golf Club course measured 7,105 yards and played to a par of 72.

Wyoming's next competition will be its own Wyoming Cowboy Classic on Monday and Tuesday, April 12-13. The Cowboy Classic will be played at the Talking Stick Golf Club in Scottsdale, Ariz.
