Portwood hits provisional mark in men's 10,000

WALNUT, Calif. - Western Washington University's Chad Portwood (Sr., Cheney) posted a national provisional qualifying time of 31:08.52 in the men's 10,000 meters at the prestigious Mt. Sac Relays late Friday night at Hilmer Lodge Stadium on the Mt. San Antonio CC campus.

The clocking was the eighth best in school history and bettered the top time this season in the Great Northwest Athletic Conference by 44 seconds.

Portwood placed 44th in a field of 59. He ran the first 5,000 meters in 15:30, then fell off pace before running the last lap in 68 seconds to drop below the provisional standard.

Another GNAC runner, John Riak of Saint Martin's University, placed 31st with a time of 30:56.34.

The race was won by Shadrack Songok of Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi in 28:16.47.
