BELLINGHAM, Wash. - Two Western Washington University records were set in the women's throws and another was tied in the men's pole vault, highlighting performances at the fifth annual Viking Twilight Track and Field Meet on Friday at the WWU campus track.

The women's records were set by Jessica Telleria (Jr., Boise, ID/Capital), who won the discus with a throw of 151-10, and by Kristina MacCully (Sr., Shoreline/Shorecrest), who was third in the hammer at 152-8. Telleria bettered her previous best, which already met the provisional qualifying standard for the NCAA Division II National Championships, by seven feet, and MacCully improved on her season best by more than 17 feet.

In the men's pole vault Tyler Thornbrue (Jr., Shelton) became the second Viking to clear 15-9 this year, tying the school record set by Hunter Verner (Jr., Brentwood, TN) earlier this month. Thornbrue won the event, finishing ahead of Greg Gause of Puget Sound on fewer misses, and also met the provisional qualifying standard for nationals.

Thornbrue was one of two Western men to reach a provisional mark. The other was Justin Brewer (Sr., Sammamish/Eastlake) in the javelin, which he won with a personal best of 199-2 despite having been out of competition the last six weeks because of an elbow injury.

Western had two multiple event winners. Kim Bascom (So., Camano Island/Stanwood) triumphed in the women's long jump (17-9 3/4) and triple jump (36-7), both with season bests, as well as being third in the high jump (5-1); and Josh Freeman (Sr., Bainbridge Island) won the men's 110 hurdles (15.10) and 400 hurdles (57.40).

Other multiple winners were Monaka White of Highline CC, who won the women's 100 (12.81) and ran the anchor leg of a victorious 4x100 relay (49.18); Danielle Ayers-Stamper of Seattle Pacific in the women's shot put (38-10 1/4) and javelin (133-9); and Dan Haakenson of Pacific Lutheran in the men's discus (147-8) and hammer (181-8).

Other event winners for the Western men were Kyle McGillen (Fr., Clinton/South Whidbey) in the long jump (22-3/4), Mark Mellein (Jr., Maple Grove, MN) in the triple jump (45-9 1/4), Peter Ellis (So., Eatonville) in the 3,000 steeplechase (10:41.3), and Ty Schepler (Fr., Walla Walla) in the 5,000 (15:27.8). McGillen was also second in the triple jump (42-4) and high jump (6-4 3/4).

For the Western women, Alex Merrick (Fr., Seattle/Holy Names) won the 100 hurdles (16.10) and was second in the long jump (16-10 3/4), and LeAnne Evans (Jr., Steilacoom) claimed the 400 hurdles (1:13.63).

Western next competes at the Great Northwest Athletic Conference Championships on May 8 at Ellensburg. The Vikings are the defending champion in the men's division.
