Oct. 20, 2005
The West Texas A&M University men's and women's cross country teams will be competing in the Lone Star Conference Championships on Saturday, Oct. 22 at Weatherford, Okla., hosted by Southwestern Oklahoma State University at Prairie West Golf Course. The men will start their 8k race at 9:30 a.m. on Saturday while the women will follow with their 6k run at 10:30 a.m.
The Lady Buffs are wrapping up a season in which they nabbed several top 5 finishes. Leading the Lady Buffs has been senior Stephanie Williams who was a stand out point guard last year for the Lady Buffs basketball team. Stephanie has finished in the top 10 in all five of the races this season. Also running well for the Lady Buff runners' has been junior Amy Garcia who has finished in the Lady Buffs' top three in every meet. The Lady Buffs' best and most impressive run of the season came on Oct. 1, when the Lady Buff runners finished second out of 25 teams at the very prestigious Oklahoma State Jamboree.
The Buffs have had a harder season than the Lady Buffs but have been running well towards the end of the season. Leading the WTAMU men has been freshmen Jose Velasquez who has finished either first or second for the Buffs in all the races he's run in. Also helping out WTAMU has been junior Victor Duran who has finished at the top of the Buff runners twice on the season.
The Buff and Lady Buff runners will continue their season if they qualify this weekend. If either team qualifies they will then move on to the Southwest Regional which will take place in Abilene, Texas on Nov. 5.
