WTAMU Women Runners Finish Second At NM Highlands Invite



Senior Stephanie Williams was WTAMU's top runner for the second meet in a row, finishing 10th, as the Lady Buffs were second out of six teams, behind Adams State, the defending NCAA-II national champions.

LAS VEGAS, N.M. -- The West Texas A&M University women's cross country team finished second out of six teams at the New Mexico Highlands University Invitational at Las Vegas, N.M. The Lady Buffs finished behind Adams State College, the defending NCAA-II national champions.

WTAMU garnered 71 points, finishing behind Adams State's 20 points, as the Grizzlies captured second through six place, finishing one place off of a perfect score of 15. That was denied by Sally Kipyego from South Plains College, who took top individual honors with an even 17:00.

The Lady Buffs' top runner was senior Stephanie Williams for the second meet in a row, as she finished the 5K run in 19:43. Junior Amy Garcia finished 12th with a 20:04, just ahead of sophomore teammate Jisel Bailon, who was running unattached while recovering from an injury. Bailon was 13th with a time of 20:06. Junior Ruby Crox was 16th with a 20:14, while sophomore Sharen Diggs was 22nd with a 20:51. Freshman Belinda Castanon finished in 21:06, good for 26th-place, and sophomore Shemika Sanford was 46th with a 24:25.

WTAMU will travel to Stillwater, Okla., this Saturday, Oct. 1, to compete in the Oklahoma State University Cowboy Jamboree, with the women's college division race starting at 9:10 a.m.
