Four Lady Buffs Receive LSC South Academic Accolades



Senior middle blocker Cynthia Carter was one of four Lady Buffs to receive LSC South academic accolades.

Four members of the West Texas A&M University Lady Buff volleyball team were recognized by the Lone Star Conference office with academic honors, as Cynthia Carter and Erin Houlihan were named to the LSC South All-Academic Team, while Rachel Altman and Jessica Scherr were tabbed as Commissioner's Honor Roll selections.

Carter is a 6-0, senior middle blocker from Corona, Calif., and has a 3.60 GPA majoring in criminal justice. This year Carter led the team and ranked fifth in the conference with .293 attack percentage and added 1.74 kpg, ranking sixth on the team. Carter's 0.87 bpg is second on the Lady Buffs. She was named to the LSC South Commissioner's Academic Honor Roll last season, as well as honorable mention All-LSC South honors this year. Carter joins Brittani Bell as WTAMU's only two seniors, who went 110-37 (.748) in their four years for the Lady Buffs, winning two Lone Star Conference Championships and were part of the 2002 Elite Eight and 2003 Southwest Regional squads.

Sophomore setter Erin Houilhan was one of four WTAMU volleyball players to receive LSC South academic recognition.


Houlihan, a 5-8, sophomore setter from Lincoln, Neb., has a 3.90 GPA as an undeclared major. This season, Houlihan was fourth in assists in the LSC, dishing out 11.20 apg. Her 1,176 assists this season, gives her 2,801 assists for her career, which is fourth on WTAMU's career assists list. Houlihan was a repeat second-team All-LSC South performer this season. She received the LSC South Setter of the Week Award four times this year.

Junior outside hitter Rachel Altman earned LSC South academic honors, one of four Lady Buffs to be honored.


Altman, a 5-10, junior outside hitter from Dallas, Texas, is majoring in mass communications with a 3.35 GPA. She came on strong at the end of the season, and was WTAMU's lone representative on the LSC All-Tournament Team, after tallying a total of 33 kills in WTAMU's two tournament matches, hitting .210, including .326 in the quarterfinal win over Midwestern State University. She also added 29 digs and 11 blocks, recording eight in the semifinal loss to the University of Central Oklahoma. Altman also garnered honorable mention All-LSC South accolades.

For the season, Altman was the only Lady Buff to play in all 128 games of all 37 matches. Altman finished second on the team in kills and service aces with 3.36 kpg and 32 aces, third in digs with 2.79 dpg and fourth in blocks with 0.80 bpg. For her career, Altman recently surpassed the 1,000 kills mark, as she now has 1,158 (a career average of 2.98 kpg).

Junior outside hitter Jessica Scherr was one of four Lady Buffs to be recognized with LSC South academic accolades.


Scherr is a 5-8 outside hitter from Kingwood, Texas, has a 3.339 GPA as a elementary education generalist major. This season Scherr led WTAMU and ranked seventh in the LSC in kills with 3.80 kpg. She also was second on the team with 2.98 dpg. Scherr is a member of the 1,000-1,000 career kills and digs club, as she now has 1,245 kills and 1,344 digs in her career. She currently is in the Top 10 of the WTAMU Career Kills list and is expected to finish her career in the top five. Scherr also is just outside the top five on the WTAMU Career Digs list, but could climb into the top five this weekend. Scherr is now a two-time All-LSC South honoree, after earning honorable mention accolades her freshman season. She also was named to the LSC South Commissioner's Academic Honor Roll last season.

WTAMU finished the season with a 27-10 overall record after being eliminated from the NCAA-II Southwest Regional by Metro State College. This was the 10th time in the last 11 seasons that the Lady Buffs have reached the 20-win plateau.
