Bell Named AVCA Honorable Mention All-American
Nov. 29, 2005
Senior libero Brittani Bell of the West Texas A&M University Lady Buff volleyball team was honored with American Volleyball Coaches Association honorable mention All-American honors.
"I can't say enough about Brittani and the impact she's had on our program over the last four years" head volleyball coach Tony Graystone said. "I've had the opportunity to watch her grow and improve throughout her career, and she is an All-American because she always worked hard and did things the right way. She made herself into one of the best liberos in the country and I'm really pleased that her efforts have been rewarded. Brittani did so much more for this team than simply pass and dig balls, and we will have a difficult time replacing her. She is clearly deserving of All-American status, and now joins a very select group of Lady Buffs that were also recognized as All-Americans."
Bell was one of four Lone Star Conference players to earn AVCA All-American honors, joining LSC champ Abilene Christian University's Amanda Slate (second-team), Lindsey Martin (third-team), Michelle Bernhardt (honorable mention).
Bell, a 5-3, senior libero from Amarillo, Texas, advanced to the national ballot after being named first-team AVCA All-Southwest Region. Bell leaves as the WTAMU and LSC career digs record holder, finishing her Lady Buff career with 2,150 digs, which ranks No. 6 on the NCAA-II Career Digs list. She also has established a new LSC single-season record with 739 digs this season, which is also a WTAMU record. Her 692 digs last season is the No. 2 spot on WTAMU's single-season digs list. The 739 digs this season is in the Top 10 on the NCAA-II Single-Season Digs With 30-point Scoring Format/Unlimited Libero Substitutions List. Bell's 5.91 dpg average sets a new LSC record and ranks in the top five on the NCAA-II list.
Bell was named the LSC South Defensive Player of the Week three times this season. She posted 30 or more digs five times in her career, including a career-high of 44 this year. In her four years in a Lady Buff uniform, WTAMU was 110-37 (.748), winning two Lone Star Conference Championships and Bell was part of the 2002 Elite Eight and 2003 and 2005 Southwest Regional squads.
WTAMU is 27-10 overall after being eliminated from the NCAA-II Southwest Regional by Metro State College. This is the 10th time in the last 11 seasons that the Lady Buffs have reached the 20-win plateau.
