Lady Buffs Well Represented in LSC South Postseason Honors

CANYON, Texas - Lone Star Conference South Division champion West Texas A&M controlled the All-LSC South Division volleyball honors as the Lady Buffs had three first-team and three-second team selections as the postseason awards were released Wednesday by league officials. WTAMU had a total of seven honorees led by setter Libby Garza, outside hitter Jessica Scherr and right-side hitter Rachel Altman on the first team. The Lady Buffs were represented on the second team by middle blockers Kelly Culley and Megan Spivey and outside hitter Natalie Johnson. Libero Sara Contreras was the division's Libero of the Year and an honorable mention choice.
In addition, WTAMU coach Tony Graystone was tabbed the South Division Coach of the Year in the balloting of the LSC South Division head coaches. Abilene Christian outside hitter Abbie Lowry led all players in the balloting and was named the LSC South Division Player of the Year. She paced the Wildcats to an 18-9 record and second place in the South Division. Tarleton State's Alesha Bourgo and Julie Hamilton joined Lowry and WTAMU's three selections on the All-LSC South first team. Texas A&M-Kingsville middle blocker Chelsea Zunker was named Freshman of the Year to wrap up the individual awards. Also on the second team with Zunker were Javelina setter/right-side hitter Heidi Scheopner and Eastern New Mexico outside hitter Jessie Macknicki. Overall, a total of 27 student-athletes were acknowledged by the LSC postseason awards program, including one player from each of the six South Division teams.
