Lady Buffs Bitten By Lady Rattlers In Five Wednesday

The West Texas A&M University Lady Buff volleyball team was bitten by the St. Mary's University Lady Rattlers, 3-2 (30-24, 26-30, 31-29, 27-30, 14-16), Wednesday night in a non-conference match at San Antonio, Texas.
Sophomore Megan Spivey tallied career-highs of 23 kills and nine blocks to lead WTAMU, which dropped its fourth match in the last five outings, and are now 18-15 overall.
The Lady Buffs need to win their final two matches this weekend to reach the 20-win plateau for the 10th-straight season and 17 of the last 18.
WTAMU splits the season series with STMU for the second year in a row, as the Lady Buffs won in the first meeting this season, on Oct. 8 at The Box as part of the BritKare Lady Buff Challenge. WTAMU still leads the all-time series, 7-2.
Sophomore outside hitter Jessica Scherr added a season-high 22 kills and fellow sophomore outside hitter Rachel Altman chipped in with 11 kills, as WTMU had 72 kills on 230 attempts with 24 errors for a .209 attack percentage for the match, including .353 in game one. Junior middle blocker Cynthia Carter tied a match-high by posting a .333 percentage on eight kills, while Scherr attacked at a .322 clip and Spivey hit .306.
WTAMU had a higher attack percentage that St. Mary's, limited the Lady Rattlers to .208, and outblocked them as well, recording 14 total team blocks
However, errors continue to snakebite the Lady Buffs, as they commited eight service errors and eight reception errors.
Junior libero Brittani Bell, this week's LSC South Defensive Player of the Week after tying her previous career-high twice on Saturday, set a new career-high with 31 digs Wednesday night, leading four other teammates in double-digit digs. Scherr had 19 digs, while Altman and freshman outside hitter Kolby Rhoades had 14 apiece and freshman setter Erin Houlihan added 12 digs.
Houlihan dished out 67 assists in the match.
St. Mary's had five players record double-digit kills, led by 25 kills by Anna Seals. Katy Migl had a match-high 42 digs and Courtney Matula doled out 66 assists.
WTAMU continues its season-ending road trip with of pair of LSC South matches, beginning Thursday, traveling to Kingsville, Texas to take on Texas A&M University-Kingsville at 7 p.m. The Lady Buffs conclude their season at Stephenville, Texas on Saturday at 6 p.m. against Tarleton State University.
